What is Spinal Dysfunction?
The spine is a bony structure that is able to hold the weight of your skull and allows for a wide range of movements. It has a natural “S” shaped curve which makes the spine more shock absorptive, improves balance and makes the spinal column stronger. It is made up of discs called vertebrae which has a hollow hole that encases and protects the spinal cord. There are tough gel encased discs that sit between each vertebrae which increase shock absorption, lubricate the vertebrae and change their shape to allow the spine to maintain its integrity while moving. Problems arise in the spine when any of these normal spinal mechanics are disturbed and the spinal canal is put at risk.
Symptoms of Spinal Dysfunction:
- Increased muscle tone in the lower extremities
- Heightened reflexes in the knee
- A rapid beating up and down of the foot when the ankle is forced to extend
- The Babinski’s and Hoffman signs
- Pain, weakness running into the legs and the arms
- Numbness and tingling in the extremities
- Loss of control of the body functions
- Muscle weakness
- Deterioration of fine muscle control
How are Spinal Dysfunctions diagnosed?
The diagnosis for a Spinal Dysfunction will begin in your Health Practitioner`s office. The Doctor will begin with an in depth health status history questionnaire and a physical examination. A bending or twisting exam will be done to try to help the doctor isolate the individual structures involved in the injury and then X-Rays, CT Scans and MRI’s may be prescribed to help determine which structures are involved in the injury and the extent of the injury. You will have the diagnosis prior to seeing your allied Healthcare Practitioners here at RNS Health & Wellness Centre.
At the RNS Health & Wellness Centre, you will fill out an in depth health status history questionnaire, which, will include a detailed account of any hobbies, sports or work related movements etc. that might aggravate the injury, what seems to make the injury better or worse, when you first started noticing problems, and how your day to day life is affected by the symptoms.
You will then have a thorough and all-encompassing physical assessment here at the RNS Health & Wellness Centre, where our Registered Healthcare Practitioner will look at your whole body and then a treatment plan is formulated to help you get back to YOUR normal, active, healthy lifestyle.
Spinal Problems Treatment Options?
Physiotherapy is a non- invasive health modality that is considered essential to spinal problems treatment. The goal of any physiotherapy program is to help to reduce your pain, improve mobility and help you prevent any reoccurrences in the future by looking at the mechanism that has caused the injury. An exercise regime focusing on range of motion exercises as well as strengthening of the injured area will commence along with any of the following modalities: Ice or Heat therapy, TENS, IFC or NMES stimulations and our grade 4 deep tissue laser.
Chiropractic Care is another non-invasive health care modality looking at treating pain and inflammation of current injuries and preventing future injuries. A chiropractic treatment would include manual therapy with hands involving mobilization and stretching, muscle relaxation and/or stimulation using various modalities such as TENS, IFC, ultrasound and our Grade 4 Deep Tissue laser. The Chiropractor will educate you on proper positioning and body mechanics to help to try to avoid this injury process in the future.
Massage therapy is a fully hands on manipulation of the body’s soft tissues. The Registered Massage Therapist at RNS Health & Wellness Centre will help to relax and stretch the injured muscles, reduce your overall stress and help the circulatory and lymphatic systems drain properly thus removing waste and metabolism by products more efficiently. Some common massage techniques used are Effleurage and Petrissage, Stripping and Circular Frictions.
