What is Medial Tibial Stress (Shin Splints) Syndrome?
It is known to be a syndrome of the lower legs of active people and athletes where there is increased pain that runs down the inside part of the lower leg. Shin Splints are the most common reported leg injury. Dancers, runners and athletes who jump as well as military personnel are the most affected by this syndrome. Shin Splints are usually attributed to a sudden increase in frequency or intensity of exercise that causes an overloading on the tibia bone and its tendons and ligaments. A lot of factors such as improper fitting or old, well used shoes, tight muscles and muscle imbalances, running terrain and a weak core muscle system can predispose an athlete to shin splints.
Symptoms of Shin Splints
- Pain on the medial side of the lower leg
- Mild swelling and redness of the medial aspect of the lower leg
- Pain that eases with rest in the beginning phases eventually leading to consistent pain even at rest
How is Patella Femoral Syndrome diagnosed?
Our allied Healthcare Professionals at RNS Health & Wellness Centre will work closely with your Medical Healthcare Practitioner who may order certain lab tests such as MRI’s, CT Scans and/ or Ultrasounds to help pinpoint the diagnosis and determine the extent of the injury. The treatment of any condition begins with an in depth health status history questionnaire, which will include a detailed account of the accident, if any, what seems to make the injury better or worse, when you first started noticing problems, and how your day to day life is affected by the symptoms. You will then have a thorough and all-encompassing physical assessment where our Registered Healthcare Practitioner will look at your whole body but focus mainly on your legs.
A treatment plan is then formulated to help you get back to YOUR normal, active, healthy lifestyle.
What are my Shin Splints treatment options?
Physiotherapy is a non- invasive health modality where surgery would be the last possible option. The goal of any physiotherapy program is to help to reduce your pain and inflammation but to look at a disease or injury process and try to help fix the problem so the injury will not reoccur. Rest and ice can be utilized during your treatments here at the RNS Health & Wellness Centre. A treatment plan that involves time in our state-of-the art gym participating in flexibility, strengthening and range of motion exercises targeting your lower body, core and balance are key. The use of our TENS/ IFC, Ultrasound machine and/ or Grade 4 deep tissue laser machine may be prescribed by our Physiotherapist.
Chiropractic Care is another non-invasive health care modality looking at treating pain and inflammation of current injuries and preventing future injuries. The Chiropractor may discuss orthotics to help get your body back in alignment. A typical treatment plan for Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints) would include any of the following: ultrasound, ice, TENS/ IFC, manual trigger point therapy as well as stretching and strengthening exercises. The Chiropractor will also assess the surrounding joints and will complete joint manipulations if it is deemed that there is impaired joint movements.
Massage therapy is a fully hands on manipulation of the body’s soft tissues. The goal of a massage therapy treatment for Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints) is to help relieve tension. The Massage Therapist at RNS Health & Wellness Centre will always work within your pain threshold. Ice therapy may be implemented before and after a treatment. The Registered Massage Therapist at the RNS Health and Wellness Centre will assess your condition and utilize the best techniques to help you through your injury process.
