What is Sciatica?
The Sciatic nerve travels through the hip and down the legs. Sciatic pain is predominantly only felt on one side of the body. Sciatic pain is generally caused by a compression on the sciatic nerve either by a compressed or herniated disc or a bone spur. Sciatic pain usually accompanies another disorder. It is not thought to be a disorder on its own.
Symptoms of Sciatica:
- Pins and needles and a feeling of numbness
- Coughing, sneezing and sitting for long periods of time seems to aggravate the disorder
- Generalized weakness of the muscles
- Joint swelling and pain
- Inability to bend knee or straighten out feet
How is Sciatica diagnosed?
Our allied Healthcare Professionals at RNS Health & Wellness Centre will work closely with your Medical Healthcare Practitioner who may order certain lab tests such as MRI’s, CT Scans and/ or Ultrasounds to help pinpoint the diagnosis and determine the extent of the injury. The treatment of any condition begins with a in depth health status history questionnaire, which will include a detailed account of the accident, what seems to make the injury better or worse, when you first started noticing problems, and how your day to day life is affected by the symptoms. You will then have a thorough and all-encompassing physical assessment where our Registered Healthcare Practitioner will look at your whole body but focus mainly on your legs.
A treatment plan is then formulated to help you get back to YOUR normal, active, healthy lifestyle.
Sciatica Treatment Options?
Physiotherapy is a non- invasive health modality where surgery would be the last possible option. The goal of any physiotherapy program is to help to reduce your pain and get back to YOUR life as soon as possible while helping to educate you on how to possibly prevent or diminish the injury/ pain process in the future. The Physiotherapist will implement a comprehensive program utilizing any of the following; ice/ heat therapy, TENS, IFC, NMES, ultrasound, Grade 4 laser machines etc. as well as a graded rehabilitation program that will focus on aerobic exercises, stretching and strengthening exercises.
Chiropractic Care is another non-invasive sciatica treatment option. The Chiropractor at RNS Health & Wellness Centre will assess your posture, bone structure and the mechanics of your extremities. The Chiropractor may utilize manipulation and any of the following top of the line TENS, IFC, NMES, ultrasound and Grade 4 Deep tissue laser machines at the RNS Health and Wellness Centre as necessary to try to help reduce pain and inflammation and increase your movement. The Chiropractor will implement a staged exercise program focusing on strengthening and flexibility.
Massage therapy is a fully hands on manipulation of the body’s soft tissues. Massage helps to reduce tension and stress by increasing endorphins. Massage therapy can help to decrease the pain associated with sciatica and help to maintain the range of motion of the joints. With Sciatica, it is sometimes found that tight gluteal muscles can contribute to the pain and massage has shown to be greatly beneficial in relaxing these muscles. The Registered Massage therapist at the RNS Health & Wellness Centre will always work with you to stay well within your pain limitations.
