What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease characterized by an ineffective use of insulin or an inability to produce insulin. Insulin is released from the pancreas in response to an increase of glucose in the blood. Insulin’s job is to help the glucose travel to the muscles etc. that require it for metabolism. There are 3 different types of Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disorder that is characterized by low insulin levels as the beta cells in the pancreas are targeted and destroyed by your immune response. This type of Diabetes requires the use of insulin to help maintain the blood glucose levels. Type 2 Diabetes is characterized by high blood glucose levels as the pancreas’ beta cells do not produce enough insulin. Medications, meal planning and exercise seems to help maintain the blood glucose levels. Gestational Diabetes is a condition that affects approximately 3% of pregnant ladies and is a transient condition that leads to an increased risk of becoming Diabetic later in life for both the baby and mother.

How is Diabetes diagnosed?
The Allied Healthcare Professionals at RNS Health & Wellness Centre will work closely with your Medical Healthcare Practitioner who will order lab tests such as a urine test and blood tests like the HbA1c and the glucose tolerance test. The treatment of any condition begins with a in depth health status history questionnaire, which will include a detailed account of your symptoms, when you first started noticing problems, and how your day to day life is affected by the symptoms. You will then have a thorough and all-encompassing physical assessment where our Registered Healthcare Practitioner will look at your whole body but focus mainly on your extremities.
A treatment plan is then formulated to help you get back to YOUR normal, active, healthy lifestyle.
